Dr Panos Economou has been appointed as Foundation Chair of the Department of Surgery following the appointment of Dr George Kanellopoulos to the position of Dean for Clinical Education.  

Dr Economou studied medicine at the Medical School of the University of Manchester. He graduated with an Honours degree (MB ChB Honours) and went on to specialize in surgery. He taught anatomy at the Medical School of the University of Manchester and taught surgery to residents. He became Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FRCS Ed) and is currently also a Member of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers (MFSTEd). He also became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS Eng) and is a Member of the Court of Examiners.

In Cyprus he has set up a small private hospital, Saint Anastasios Clinic – Centre for Laparoscopic Operations and General Surgery, and he works as a consultant general surgeon.

His interest in promoting surgical education led him to be elected President of the Cyprus Surgical Society for the period 2004 – 2006. He is currently an elected member of the society’s board.

Dr Economou has been with the Medical School since its beginning, teaching anatomy and surgery and serving as Lead for Surgery.
