With an impressive ceremony held at the State Theatre in Nicosia on Friday 15 May, 2015 featuring as keynote speaker President of Cyprus Nicos Anastassiades and attended by parents and guests from across the globe, the University of Nicosia Medical School celebrated the first graduation of doctors in Cyprus. Twenty-seven graduates received a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from St George’s, University of London (SGUL). In addition, four faculty members were awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare and Biomedical Education from SGUL.
All partners involved in this international medical collaboration took part in the academic procession, including the Rector of the University of Nicosia and the Executive Dean of the Medical School, the Chair of Council and the Principal of St George’s, University of London, the CEO and the Vice President for Research of Sheba Medical Center in Israel, the Senior Vice President of Swedish Covenant Hospital in Chicago, and the President and the Dean of Medical School from the Ponce Health Sciences University in Puerto Rico.
In his speech, President Anastassiades praised the high level of medical education offered by the University of Nicosia Medical School, which supports the government’s objectives for quality in higher education. He added that the diverse programmes offered by the Medical School are an example of what can be achieved through hard work and determination and for that he congratulated its management and faculty.
President Anastassiades also applauded the determination and perseverance of the graduates to pursue a high quality programme and wished them courage and strength so they can serve their honoured profession with integrity and dedication.
Apart from the President, the importance of the event was marked by the Ministers of Health and Education, the British High Commissioner, the Ambassadors of the United States and Israel, leaders and party representatives, Members of Parliament, the President of the Cyprus Medical Association, and representatives of many medical societies.
